Variety.com is reporting that The Rock may star in the upcoming “Big Trouble in Little China” remake, should the project get off the ground. Former WWE Champion Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson currently stars in the No. 1 film worldwide, “San Andreas.”
The report states,
“Following the box office success of “San Andreas,” star Dwayne Johnson is in negotiations to star in a remake of ’80s cult classic “Big Trouble in Little China” for 20th Century Fox, sources tell Variety.j
Ashley Miller and Zack Stentz are penning the script with Johnson and his producing partners Dany Garcia and Hiram Garcia on board to produce through their 7 Bucks Entertainment banner.
The original starred Kurt Russell as Jack Burton, a trucker who gets dragged into a centuries-old mystical battle in Chinatown between warring clans. The pic was directed by “Halloween” helmer John Carpenter and, while not a huge commercial success, went on to amass a cult following over the years.
Besides “San Andreas,” which brought in more than $100 million at the global box office in its opening weekend, Johnson also returned to form as Agent Hobbs in “Furious 7,” which became the first film to cross the billion-dollar milestone at the worldwide box office this year.
He also has his new TV show “Ballers” bowing on June 21 on HBO and is currently filming “Central Intelligence” for New Line.”
The Rock is also rumored to possibly compete at WrestleMania 32 against Triple H, should his schedule allow it. However, so is “Stone Cold” Steve Austin, who planted the seeds to a bout with Brock Lesnar during the June 1 edition of the “Stone Cold Podcast” with Paul Heyman. Austin has previously stated that he doesn’t want to come back and work a WrestleMania if others like The Rock are competing, because there doesn’t need to be so many main events on a show.
Could 2016 be the year where they both return to in-ring WWE competition?
Editor’s Note:
This guy is everywhere! Hate to see a “bulky” Jack Burton, but “Big Trouble…” is supposedly one of Johnson’s favorite movies, so hopefully he delivers if he gets the role.
