Current TNA World Heavyweight Champion and former Olympic Gold Medalist Kurt Angle announced during recent tapings for “Impact Wrestling” that he’ll need to take some time away from the ring.
The 46-year-old revealed to the live audience that he will be undergoing surgery to remove a tumor in his neck that was recently discovered by his doctors, although he didn’t reveal whether it was cancerous.
The Wrestling Observer Newsletter reports that the operation isn’t considered major surgery and that Angle should be able to return to the ring in roughly three or so weeks.
Angle never mentioned a specific date for his return, but if the Newsletter’s timeline checks out, he should be available to work the final television tapings of the month in July.
He did, however, note that he may be gone for quite a while, although due to the dates of the tapings and when they’ll be airing on Destination America, Angle probably just said that for cohesive purposes.
With Angle not competing at TNA “Slammiversary” on June 28, the company has decided to go with a main event of Jeff Jarrett vs. Drew Galloway vs. Bobby Roode vs. Eric Young vs. Matt Hardy to determine the first-ever King of the Mountain champion.
Editor’s Note
Angle will be defending his TNA World Heavyweight Championship on an upcoming episode of “Impact Wrestling” against Ethan Carter III. The match was originally slated to take place at TNA “Slammiversary,” but was inevitably bumped to weekly television instead.
