According to a report by PWInsider.com, Ring of Honor Wrestling is looking to sign some of its top-tier talent to lucrative deals so that World Wrestling Entertainment doesn’t “raid” it’s roster.
Several former ROH talent have made the jump to WWE and NXT developmental in the past, including Kevin Steen (Kevin Owens), El Generico (Sami Zayn), Tyler Black (Seth Rollins), Claudio Castagnoli (Cesaro), Chris Hero (Kassius Ohno) and Matt Sydal (Evan Bourne).
ROH is namely trying to “lock-up” Nick and Matt Jackson of The Young Bucks, one of the most popular tag teams in all of professional wrestling.
The company wants to sign The Young Bucks to a deal that would offer them a salary, although they would have to go through ROH if they wanted to work any other indy dates.
There likely wouldn’t be much of a fight if the brothers wanted to continue with New Japan Pro Wrestling, though, as they draw incredible support and revenue as members of the Bullet Club faction.
Reddit user MetsFan4Ever reported that a deal was close to being signed, although Nick and Matt want to continue wrestling for PWG because they feel that company gave them opportunities when no one else would.
There is also the issue of merchandising that’s apparently holding negotiations up.
The Young Bucks have turned down an offer from WWE in the past, but if they were to ever change their minds, an exclusive deal with ROH would ultimately prevent them from making the jump.
Editor’s Note
I completely understand ROH’s mindset of keeping their talent in-house as much as possible. The company is now getting a reputation of being nothing more than WWE’s feeder system because of all the talent leaving for better opportunities. I’m not sure how this will all play out, though. Could it alienate certain wrestlers?
