World Wrestling Entertainment has confirmed that the ever-popular “NXT Takeover” will now air monthly on the WWE Network as a two-hour special:
NXT TAKEOVER – LIVE! – AIRS MONTHLY ON WEDNESDAYS
“The future is here. WWE’s hottest up-and-coming Superstars compete to prove they’ve got what it takes. More than just evolution, it’s a revolution! Witness these WWE Superstars of tomorrow as they take over WWE Network with live two-hour specials.”
There have already been five “NXT Takeover” specials dating back to Feb. 27, 2014 with “NXT Takeover: Arrival.”
At “NXT Takeover: Rival” on Feb. 11 of this year, Kevin Owens defeated Sami Zayn in the main event to become NXT Champion nearly two months after debuting with the brand.
Finn Balor also defeated Adrian Neville to become the new No. 1 contender, although he lost his title match to Owens several weeks later.
Editor’s Note
I’m torn on this news. I’ve always felt that the irregularity of the “NXT Takeover” specials made each event feel all the more special. It allowed for storylines to get the time they deserve, leading to better matches and the WWE Universe being more invested. I’m certainly looking forward to catching them more often, but hopefully not at the expense of quality.
