On Tuesday, June 24, WWE was in Pittsburgh, Pa., as the company taped both “WWE Main Event” and “Smackdown” at the CONSOL Energy Center. While in the city, WWE also took the time to announce a charity in honor of the late Connor “The Crusher” Michalek, a well-known hero of the city.
A previous report by WrestlingDVDNews.com shows that this was not all that WWE accomplished during its stop in the “Steel City.” According to the website, WWE also interviewed professional wrestling legend Bruno Sammartino. The reasoning for the interview is a career retrospective, which WWE could then turn into a DVD/Blu-ray set, a special on the WWE Network, or perhaps, even both.
For a number of years, the idea has been discussed. In the past, WWE has mentioned such a project in surveys to fans on its mailing list. In fact, in late 2013, it was on a survey accompanied with the snippet, “a biography with new Hall of Fame footage, plus bonus matches.”
Part of the reason such a project can be put in motion is because of WWE and Sammartino getting back on good terms. Sammartino was inducted into the WWE Hall of Fame in 2013, something that had been a controversial topic for quite some time. Following his induction, Sammartino continued to remain on good terms with WWE. On October, 7, 2013, Sammartino was on “Monday Night Raw” from Pittsburgh, receiving a birthday greeting from the hometown crowd.
Most recently, Triple H revealed a statue of Bruno Sammartino during WrestleMania XXX week. In early 2014, a planned statue for Sammartino in Pittsburgh was denied by the city’s National Hockey League team.
Editor’s Note
This is very welcome news. Sammartino’s remarkable career should be able to be experienced by the younger generations of wrestling fans.
