2K18 will see the debut of both MyPlayer and Road To Glory, both of which work hand in hand together. To begin with, MyPlayer allows you to create characters that are both upgradeable and customizable. These players can be used in MyCareer (Available through single player) and Road To Glory (Available through multiplayer).
MyPlayer
As you progress in Road To Glory or MyCareer, your character will progress in every aspect. The home screen for MyPlayer contains portals to both Road To Glory and MyCareer, as well as links to edit, upgrade or display your MyPlayers.
2K have introduced the MyPlayer Wizard in addition to this. The first time you attempt to make a MyPlayer, the wizard will help you create a basic superstar. While they note in the blog post that you can have an expanded wealth of options available from their creation suite to edit your character later, the wizard will give you the basic options to get you started.
The wizard helps set up the following:
- Basic Info;
- Appearance;
- Fighting Style;
- Weight Class;
- Height;
- Attire;
- Moves/Taunts;
- Presentation (Entrance/Victory scene).
Your MyPlayer will have a pre-selected fighting style of your choice. These styles have strengths and weaknesses. It is suggested that you choose the style that best represents how you like to play.
Here is the list of each fighting style and the attributes they have:
- High Flyer- Agility and Speed;
- Showboat- Stamina and Reversals;
- Striker- Striking and Stamina;
- Technician- Technique and Grappling;
- Brawler- Toughness and Athleticism;
- Strong Style- Grappling and Reversals;
- Powerhouse- Power and Grappling;
- Giant- Power and Toughness.
Players can upgrade several areas of their MyPlayers. This includes their attributes, skills and abilities. There are ten attribute towers:
- Striking;
- Grappling;
- Power;
- Toughness;
- Technique;
- Reversals;
- Athleticism;
- Speed;
- Stamina;
- Promo (Exclusive to MyCareer).
There are also sub-attributes for each of the towers above that can be found inside the attributes screen under the upgrades section in the mode. The more points you spend on your MyPlayer, the higher their overall rating will be.
2K explain that most skills and abilities are locked to begin with, though some will be unlocked by default based on your fighting style. You can purchase all other abilities at any point if you have the correct VC. That said, not all skills are usable by every fighting style, so be aware of this.
You’ll be able to unlock hundreds of moves and superstar parts to customize your MyPlayer over time. You can find these unlocks in MyCareer, Road To Glory and with the new loot cases. Once they are unlocked, you can purchase them with VC.
Loot cases come in three levels as you’d expect: Bronze, Silver and Gold. Obviously the rarer the case, the rarer the items are that you’d find. You can purchase loot cases in all three modes, or earn them in MyCareer or Road To Glory through progression.
The loot cases offer up several types of rewards such as superstar parts, moves, VC or boosts to be used in Road To Glory. There are three levels for rewards: Common, Uncommon and Rare.
Road To Glory gives players the ability to battle against other MyPlayers to earn stars and qualify for pay-per-view events. You simply start matchmaking, press ‘find match’ and you’ll be given a worthy opponent when you get to the main screen.
There will be a daily event that will provide you with a different match type every day. One day you might compete in a TLC match and the next an Extreme Rules match. In addition, the daily event cycles through a number of arenas such as WWE ‘Raw,’ NXT and WCW ‘Monday Nitro.’
You can earn boots in game, with the ability to equip up to five active boosts per match. They can enhance your MyPlayer greatly. Some increase stats in striking, speed and grappling whereas other types reward you with additional XP at the end of your match. Only one boost slot is available when you first start playing, though player progression will help unlock additional boost slots.
There are six ranks in Road To Glory that your MyPlayer can earn. Over the course of 50 levels, you will achieve these ranks. Levelling up earns you loot cases, attribute points and additional boost slots. Here are the ranks, in order:
- Prospect;
- Rookie;
- Superstar;
- Main Eventer;
- Living Legend;
- Hall of Famer.
One of the most exciting features of Road To Glory is having the opportunity to compete at a PPV in-game as the physical PPV matches. Once you’ve earned the amount of stars required to qualify, you will complete challenges to get to the Main Event of the PPV. If you do not reach the right amount, you can purchase your way into these events. The in-game PPVs will run over multiple days, so don’t fear that you won’t be able to complete it if you have a busy schedule or want to watch the physical WWE PPV.
Your PPV main event will see you compete against WWE superstars who are featured in the real-world PPV. Challenges to earn your spot in the main event will include things such as performing a number of signature moves or putting an opponent through the announce table.
If you are able to complete the entire challenge and succeed, you will earn an exclusive superstar part that is themed to the event. The first, for ‘TLC: Tables, Ladders & Chairs’ later this year appears to be a red mask.
One thing we at Wrestling Rumors would like to point out is that earlier this year, 2K explained that online will not improve this year. They are looking into dedicated servers in preparation for next year, though. This may mean that Road To Glory for many users is almost impossible to play. If this is the sole feature you desire to play, we suggest checking your internet connection before purchasing the game.
If you haven’t watched it yet, we highly suggest you watch this very interesting trailer for Road To Glory, released on IGN by 2K.
