Last year, the depth of NXT’s Tag Team division was proven when WWE paid tribute to Hall of Famer The American Dream Dusty Rhodes with a tag team tournament called “The Dusty Rhodes Tag Team Classic.”
The winner of the trophy last year was Finn Balor and Samoa Joe, but the tournament also launched many new teams, including American Alpha, and the current NXT Tag Team Champions The Revival.
According to a report from CageSideSeats.com, the Dusty Rhodes Tag Team Classic is expected to make a return to NXT soon. It began around the same time last year and concluded at NXT Takeover: Respect.
Samoa Joe and Finn Balor winning the tournament was the catalyst for their rivalry that is regarded as one of the best in NXT history, if not the best.
Based on the success of last year’s tournament and the current roster of NXT’s Tag Team division, it would be a shame not to have it become an annual event for WWE in The Dream’s honor.
If nothing else, it’ll showcase WWE developmental’s tag team scene and emphasize the future of tag team wrestling in the future.
