That makes a change. Sometimes you see a star who completely takes over everything in a wrestling promotion. It doesn’t matter what anyone else is doing because they are not going to catch the person on top. It has happened in a lot of promotions at one point or another and is often a good thing to have happen. At some point it has to end though, and that seems to be the case again.
Back in August 2020, Roman Reigns made his return from a long hiatus due to worries about the Coronavirus pandemic. As soon as he was back, Reigns took over SmackDown, becoming the Universal Champion one week later. Reigns has dominated SmackDown ever since, holding the title for the better part of eight months and smashing through everyone around him. However, WWE might be seeing things differently these days.
According to Sports Illustrated, WWE considers Bianca Belair vs. Sasha Banks to be the top story on SmackDown, with Reigns moving down for the first time since he won the Universal Title on August 30. This comes after Banks vs. Belair main evented the first night of WrestleMania 37. Both stories were part of the post-WrestleMania 37 SmackDown, with Reigns opening the show but none of the three were in the main event.
This week’s SmackDown saw Belair celebrate her title victory over Sasha Banks. Following the segment, Banks had nothing to say and walked off. Also during the show, Bayley suggested that she wanted to challenge Belair for the title. Reigns opened the show to brag about his victory but Cesaro interrupted. Cesaro challenged Reigns and would wind up facing Jey Uso later in the show, when Seth Rollins interfered. This would suggest that Cesaro vs. Rollins will be continuing rather than Cesaro vs. Reigns.
Which did you like better? Check out both of their stories from WrestleMania and SmackDown:
Opinion: This is an interesting way to go though I’m not sure how much more we are going to see out of Banks vs. Belair. Their WrestleMania match was very good, though I’m not sure how much steam they have left. Both will do well when they move on, but their feud seems to have reached its apex. Reigns has a lot more to do though and his star power alone will carry him a long way.
I’m not sure how long this is going to be the case either, as Reigns is so good in his role that it is going to be hard to imagine anyone taking the title from him. Go with what has worked for so long now and we could be in for a rather long run with the title. At the same time, Belair has hit pure gold as of late and has maintained the fire she has had for several months now. If anyone can surpass Reigns, it would be her, and that is almost hard to fathom.
