One more time. If there is one period in WWE history that is discussed above all others, it is the Attitude Era. The company was on fire and presenting wrestling in a way that had not been done on a mainstream basis before, but there was something else going on at the same time. At the time, the WWF was going head to head with WCW every week in the Monday Night Wars. WCW ultimately lost, but things are not quite over yet.

The Monday Night Wars came to an end twenty years ago this week, with the final episode of Monday Nitro airing on Monday night, March 26, 2001. The show ended with Shane McMahon walking out on Monday Nitro to announce that he had purchased the company, leading to the Invasion storyline which took place over the next seven months. That was it for WCW, but we might be seeing one more thing.

According to Fightful.com, WWE has registered a new trademark for WCW, specifically listing it for toys and merchandise. This will likely be for new merchandise featuring the WCW name or logo, though WWE has not announced anything new. WWE did not make any mention of the final edition of Monday Nitro or WCW during the SmackDown which aired on the anniversary.

WCW did have its moments. Check out some of their better times:

Opinion: I really do hope that this is something a little bit more respectful than some of WWE’s usual memories of WCW. While the promotion was a disaster at the end, there were some things they did which worked out well. Hopefully WWE offers them a little respect, as it isn’t like it would be hard to come up with something good from the promotion. Twenty years really should be long enough to stop gloating about a victory.
