They haven’t done something like this before. There are a lot of ways to crown champions in wrestling but one of the most popular is through a tournament. This is a really simple way to go about doing things: put everyone in a field and have the last person standing take the prize. It’s a very simple concept, but there are other ways to try it, one of which WWE will be trying.

Earlier this week, WWE announced that they will be crowning an interim Cruiserweight Champion due to Jordan Devlin not being able to defend the title. Devlin will still be the official champion, but WWE needs to crown a champion to defend the title in his absence. However, WWE is going to be doing something else this time around and it could be an interesting change. has announced the format for the upcoming tournament, which will feature a round robin format rather than the traditional single elimination. The tournament will include eight entrants in two blocks. Each of the four entrants per block will face each other and the best record from each block will advance to the final for the title. There is no word on who will be participating in the tournament so far.

The new champ is going to have his work cut out for him. Check out some of Devlin’s best:

Opinion: This is certainly a change of pace for WWE as I don’t believe they have ever used a round robin format. It does offer more matches, though I could see how some fans might not prefer this format as well as the traditional one. There are some talented wrestlers on the roster though and this might give some of the something to do for a change after spinning their wheels for so long.
