That’s not so fantastic. To say that Roman Reigns has been all over the place as a main event star is an understatement. In the long history of wrestling, there are very few names who have been pushed as hard and as long with such up and down results. He’s main evented every WrestleMania since 2015 and the fans aren’t exactly taking to him despite being pushed for so hard and so long. It’s like no one else in wrestling history, but that doesn’t mean that other wrestlers in history are pleased with how things are going.

He’s not doing so well in some areas.

Roman Reigns addresses the Steel Cage Match controversy: Raw, April 30, 2018

Former NWA United States Tag Team Champion and tag team legend Bobby Fulton was recently a guest on the Pancakes and Powerslams Show and discussed Reigns current push and its lack of success. Fulton is not a fan of the way Reigns is being presented and thinks that he should either be released or turned heel, at least for the time being. He also tells a story about how he was having the same issues earlier in his career and what Jerry Lawler suggested. Here are his comments, with transcription courtesy of Wrestlinginc.com:

On Reigns Doing His Job Properly

“I’ma tell you right now. If Roman Reigns was wrestling back in the day, they would have fired him already. Because he can’t get the job done if they hired him as a babyface.”

On Having This Problem In His Career and Lawler’s Advice

Jerry Lawler told me one time when I was breaking in the business, I was going out to the ring and was wrestling underneath – and underneath means that you’re at the bottom of the rung – and it got to the point where the people knew I was gonna lose when I walked to the ring and I was working in Memphis. I said, ‘man, the people are booing me when I walk to the ring!’ [Lawler] said, ‘well, maybe it’s time for you to go. You’re here as a babyface.’ And, like I said, if Roman Reigns was wrestling back in the day, and I mean I give all props to his family and where he comes from and who he is. But as far as getting the job done as a professional wrestler, even as a sports entertainer, he’s not getting it done because he is not able to make that connection with the people.

And On What WWE Should Do About Reigns

“The people just aren’t buying him. He needs to become a heel and just forget about it if Vince is gonna keep him hired. But if they’re gonna keep doing what they’re doing, then they need to turn him heel or get rid of him because he’s not gonna be an asset to the company and whoever he beats he’s gonna make them more popular just like Brock Lesnar. The more Brock Lesnar beat on him and bloodied him was the more the people got behind Brock. So, with that being said, if this would have been back in my day, Roman Reigns would either be a heel or be fired right now because he’s not getting the job done… Vince is trying to prove a point but he can’t prove it because it just ain’t gonna happen.”

Opinion: That’s….a bit harsh. While I agree that Reigns is pushed too hard and the fans aren’t buying him as the main event face of the promotion, I do find it to be a stretch to say that Reigns has no place as a face in the company. Reigns still gets good reactions on house shows and younger fans certainly seem to like him. That sounds like he’s being pushed improperly, but I can’t imagine that one of the two best options is to just get rid of him. I get that he’s not exactly clicking in his role, but that’s rather extreme given how much of an investment has been put into him.

What do you think of Reigns? Other than turning him heel, how would you fix him? Let us know in the comments below.
