The other generation. Wrestling has been around for a very long time now and in theory it will be around for a very long time to come. There have been all kinds of names to come and go over the years, but some of those names stand the test of time and are still remembered even decades after their careers end. One of those names made a surprise cameo this week.
There have been a lot of changes in wrestling over the years and it is amazing to see someone still standing the test of time. Some of the older wrestlers are still well known and their reputations are very strong to this day. That makes an appearance from them that much better, especially if they have not been around in a long time. We saw someone make such an appearance in a place you might not have expected.
Former NWA World Champion Dory Funk Jr. made a surprise appearance on this week’s AEW Dynamite, appearing in the crowd before the FTR vs. Mike Sydal/Matt Sydal tag match. Funk did not say anything and was acknowledged only as a fan. There is nothing to suggest that he will be a regular on the show. Funk, 79, held the NWA World Title for over four years from February 1969 until May 1973 and last wrestled in 2019.
Opinion: I know Funk might not be the most well known name to everyone today but he is the definition of a legend and someone who was a huge star in his time. Even after losing the NWA World Title, he was still one of the biggest names in wrestling and there is a reason that he is still making such an appearance today. The Funk name means a lot in this business and it is great to see him doing something like this.
