What almost was. We are less than three days away from WrestleMania 40 and the card seems to be completely set. One of these matches seemed to be a replacement after an injury and now we know what the official plans for the match were before things got derailed.

WWE World heavyweight Champion Seth Rollins spoke with Sports Illustrated before WrestleMania and confirmed that the original plan called for him to defend the title against CM Punk at the show. However, Punk tore his tricep at the Royal Rumble, with Drew McIntyre going on to win the Elimination Chamber match to earn the shot instead. There is no word on how the plans for Rollins’ tag match on Night One might have changed had he been facing Punk rather than McIntyre.
They were on the way there. Check out how Punk vs. Rollins has gone:
Opinion: I don’t think it is all that surprising that Punk vs. Rollins was originally planned for WrestleMania as the match was teased more than once before Punk’s injury. There is a story there and it very well could have led to Punk FINALLY getting his WrestleMania main event. After what happened before and following the injury, the match still seems likely to happen and that could make for an awesome showdown when we finally get there.
