It’s back. There have been all kinds of titles throughout WWE’s history and some of them have been around for a very long time. Those titles, throughout their decades of history, have been updated many times over and some of the previous designs have been retired. It is rare to see them come back at some point, but that was what we got to see in a special moment this weekend.
IN CASE YOU MISSED IT: #1 In The Books: Inaugural WWE Women’s United States Champion Crowned At Saturday Night’s Main Event
This weekend’s WWE Saturday Night’s Main Event was headline by Cody Rhodes defending the WWE Championship against Kevin Owens. Rather than wearing the current WWE Championship, Rhodes came to the ring wearing the classic Winged Eagle title, which was used from 1988-1998. This was teased earlier in the week when WWE CCO Triple H gave Rhodes a case, saying it was a one night only gift. There is currently nothing to indicate that the title will be used again.
This was great. Check out Rhodes wearing the title, and the title in its day:
Opinion: This was pretty much pure nostalgia, but it helps that the belt looks great and was one of the longest standing titles in the company’s history. You do not see WWE bringing back older things like this very often but it was great to see it happen here. If nothing else, the tease that we got from a few days ago made me want to see if WWE would actually do this, making the reveal that much better.
