Not so fast. Retirement is a tricky situation in wrestling as you never know when you are going to see a wrestler hang up their boots for good. It can be a huge moment when a wrestler decides they are done in the ring, but there is always the chance that they will return later. One current legend was teasing retirement this week but it turns out he had quite a different idea.

Back at Backlash, AJ Styles lost his challenge to WWE Universal Champion Cody Rhodes. Since then, Styles has attempted to get another shot, saying that he did not have long left in his career. This week on SmackDown, Styles came to the ring to make an announcement and suggested that he might be retiring. However, once Rhodes came to the ring, Styles attacked him and laid him out to end the show. No rematch has officially been announced between the two as of yet.

Opinion: This is something that WWE has done before and it is still effective. Styles is going to be 47 years old this weekend and it is true that he probably does not have a ton of time left in the ring. That being said, the idea of using his retirement as a way to lure Rhodes into one more title match makes a lot of sense. Their first match was quite good and this could add a rather nice edge to rematch.
