Title reigns are made to end. There are a lot of titles in WWE today and several of them are in NXT. The promotion has quite a few titles to go around their two hours a week and that can make for some important matches up and down the card. NXT has done a great job at making their titles seem important and that seemed to be the case this week with multiple title changes.
This is a big week for NXT as they have a pair of Takeover shows with both nights of Takeover: Stand & Deliver. For the first time ever, Takeover is being split in two, but that also means there will be more matches than usual. Rather than the usual five match card, we are getting ten matches over the span of two nights. That includes several title matches, some of which took place on night one.
There were two title changes during night one of Takeover: Stand & Deliver. First up, MSK defeated the Grizzled Young Veterans and Legado del Fantasma in a triple threat match to win the vacant NXT Tag Team Titles. Oney Lorcan and Danny Burch were forced to vacate the titles due to Burch suffering a shoulder injury in March. Then, in the main event, Raquel Gonzalez defeated Io Shirai to win the NXT Women’s Title. This ends Shirai’s reign at over ten months, making it the third longest reign in the title’s nearly eight year history.
It was a heck of a show. Check out how the title matches went down:
Opinion: This is the kind of thing that needs to happen to make sure that the show felt important. At the end of the day, people are going to remember title matches as frequently as almost anything else and that should be the case here. You need some kind of historic moment to make a show seem bigger and that is what happened in the last two matches on the card. Odds are we see something else on Thursday, but this was a rather nice start.
