He made it work. There are only a handful of stars in WWE who have made it to the top of the company and can say they are among the most important names. Those are the stars you are going to see over and over again and they often make the biggest impacts. That is the case with one current star, but it was not always going to be the case, especially when he made his full time debut.

AJ Styles made his full time WWE debut as a surprise entrant in the 2016 Royal Rumble. During an appearance on the My Love Letter To Wrestling podcast, Styles revealed that Vince McMahon had no idea who he was prior to his Royal Rumble appearance. Styles went on to have a very basic match the next night on Monday Night Raw as McMahon needed to see him wrestle a simple match. McMahon then told Styles that he needed a “pitbull”, which is how Styles described his work in New Japan. Styles that after he started working that style, he felt he gained McMahon’s trust.

Opinion: Sometimes that little change is all that you need and it seems that McMahon pointing Styles in the right direction was what turned the tide. That is how things should be going and it wound up working out rather well for Styles. If nothing else, you do not see someone pop into the company at that stage of your career and have such success very often, but it certainly worked for him.
