I don’t think I get it either. At Extreme Rules 2018, Seth Rollins and Dolph Ziggler were featured in the show’s main event, a thirty minute Iron Man match. This had been set up for several weeks and wound up headlining the show in a bit of a surprise. The other surprise was the fans’ reaction to the match, which wasn’t exactly polite to put it mildly. As you might expect, Rollins had something to say about that.

On a recent episode of the In This Corner With Brian Campbell podcast, Rollins talked about the reaction his Iron Man match with Zigger received. During the match, a clock was shown on screen and counted down with the fans counting every ten seconds ala the Royal Rumble. The match was virtually ignored while the fans went on like this for the thirty minute time limit plus overtime. Here are some comments, with transcription courtesy of NoDQ.com:

On His Reaction To The Crowd

“I think upset is the right way to put it. People are like, ‘did you get mad?’ Naw dude, I just get sad because I love performing and I love having that synergy with the crowd and when they’re, you know paying attention to something else, inexplicably really, it’s frustrating from a performance perspective. Especially when you know you’re in the main event of a pay-per-view for the Intercontinental Championship, it hasn’t been done in twenty-odd years and it’s the match that you know, most people in the building paid money to see, to begin with.”

And On The Crowd’s Mentality

“So it still doesn’t make sense to me. I don’t get it. I can’t imagine myself paying money to go to some sort of show or game or concert or something and you know and not paying attention to what’s going on. Again, you know they did buy their tickets they’re allowed to do whatever they wanna do with their time. So it’s sort of a double-edged sword in that sense. They can do what they want, but yeah it definitely makes you question your own validity in that spot.”

Notice the crowd.

Seth Rollins and Dolph Ziggler push themselves to the limit: WWE Extreme Rules 2018

Opinion: Can you blame Rollins for being disappointed? The way the crowd reaction came off was “We don’t care what you’re doing, because we don’t want to be here right now. We’ll just entertain ourselves while you two do your life’s work in front of us.” How would that make anyone feel? I’m not sure what the fans would rather have seen, but it wasn’t what they were being offered.

What did you think of the match? Did it deserve that kind of a reaction? Let us know in the comments below.
