He had to. Wrestlers have a reputation for working through injuries as there is often little time for them to heal while spending so much time on the road. That can allow injuries to pile up in a hurry and in some cases it means that the wrestlers are going to have to take time away from the ring. That was the case again this week and now we know some more about how the situation came to be.

Earlier this week, Wes Lee announced that he needed back surgery, which would result in him being out of action for 8 to 12 months. As a result, Lee was replaced by Dragon Lee in his upcoming NXT North American Title match. During the conference call promoting this weekend’s NXT Deadline, WWE executive Shawn Michaels said that Lee has been dealing with his issue for “quite some time”. Wes is said to have made the decision himself, with Dragon Lee being added only about twenty four hours before the decision was made. Wes last wrestled on November 28.

He is quite the star. Check out Wes when he is in the ring:

Opinion: This is a rather sad situation but thankfully Wes did the right thing and walked away rather than trying to go too far and causing even more damage to his back. Wes has quite the serious injury but at least he should be able to get his surgery and get on the road to recovery as soon as possible. WWE handled it about as well as could be expected and now we should be in for another good title match.
