That would be a way to go. Last September, CM Punk was involved in a backstage altercation with the Elite after AEW All Out 2022. This resulted in Punk being suspended indefinitely, though he has also been out of action due to a torn tricep. The injury seems to be healed up though and now he is reportedly coming back to the ring. It just might be against a surprise opponent.

Punk has been rumored to return to AEW in June, along with the possibility of a feud with Chris Jericho. However, according to Fightful Select, Punk is interested in facing Samoa Joe in his return feud. Joe is currently the Ring Of Honor Television Champion and occasionally wrestled in AEW as well. Punk and Joe have a history in Ring Of Honor, wrestling a pair of sixty minute draws, though they have not been in a match together since 2005. There is no word on if the match will be a one off match or a feud, or if it will take place whatsoever. Punk is expected to return on June 17 in Chicago, though there has been no official announcement.

Opinion: That’s not the match I was expecting, but having Punk in a completely fresh match is rather interesting. At the same time, I’m not sure how it would be to rehash a feud from about 18 years ago. It would have some nostalgia, but it would certainly be a unique way to go. If nothing else, having Punk back in any way is a good thing, as he certainly brings the star power.
