He went too far? The rise of AEW has changed the way the wrestling world operates as there is now another major wrestling promotion airing on national television. The main event of this week’s Monday Night Raw saw Seth Rollins and AJ Styles team up to defeat the Judgment Day. During the match, Rollins slid to the floor and put his arm around Rhea Ripley’s shoulders. This week on the Bump, Rollins referenced the stunt, saying he hoped “his old protege Murphy wasn’t too offended.” Rollins was referencing Buddy Matthews, an AEW star who formerly wrestled in WWE as Murphy and is Ripley’s real life boyfriend. Matthews has not responded to Rollins’ statement.

Opinion: This is the kind of nod that doesn’t hurt anyone involved and is good for a chuckle, which is a perfectly fine way to go. Rollins referencing someone that fans might remember is probably going to be glossed over if they don’t know the real story and that’s ok. If nothing else, it was a nice little insiders’ line that doesn’t hurt anything and there’s nothing wrong with that.
What did you think of the reference? Who will be Rollins’ next challenger? Let us know in the comments below.
