No more. There have been all kinds of changes in WWE this year, with the biggest being the company’s new ownership. Vince McMahon sold the company to Endeavor, marking the first change of ownership in the company in decades. This has led to a few different changes in the company, including what appeared to be a long term McMahon rule being completely dropped.

According to Wrestling Observer Radio, the McMahon rule about no advertising on the ring has been “thrown out”. There has not yet been advertising placed on the mats, but this is now apparently a possibility. UFC, also owned by Endeavor, has featured advertisements on its mats for years. WWE’s Survivor Series featured several announcements from sponsors throughout the show.

Opinion: While I can get the idea of the clean ring mat feeling almost sacred, I do get the idea that there is a lot of money to be made by selling that space. I would be very happy to see it stay ad free, but if that space featuring some advertisements lets WWE keep a few more wrestlers around or boost something else up, I can live with it. This is another of those changes that are taking place and that’s not a terrible situation.
