And that’s that. Retirement is a strange topic in wrestling, as wrestlers often have a hard time officially hanging it up. At some point every wrestler has their last match, though in some cases it might be a long time after they have said they were done in the first place. That is the situation again with a former WWE personality and independent star, who has announced their retirement.

Former WWE referee and independent star Drake Wuertz, 38, has announced his retirement from in-ring competition. Wuertz began his in-ring career in 2002 and was hired by WWE as a referee in 2014, working in that role until 2021. Wuertz did get to speak some in WWE. Check out his time there, plus another referee turned wrestler:

Opinion: Everyone has to do it at some point and Wuertz is no exception. While he had some controversy to the end of his WWE career, he did well as a referee, which is an important role in any promotion. Wuertz did his job well in the ring and that is something a lot of wrestlers can’t say, so he would certainly seem to be ahead of the curve in at least one aspect.
