Who knew what when? Over the better part of the last two months, WWE has run a storyline focusing on Drake Maverick’s job status. Maverick was one of several names released from his WWE contract on April 15, causing him to release a very emotional video about how much this meant to him. Maverick went on a rollercoaster of a story, but it might have been a bit more true than it seemed.
The biggest issue during the story was finding out how much of the story was planned in advance. Maverick’s video was so emotional that it was hard to imagine he wasn’t really being fired, but then he was given a new contract after not winning the Cruiserweight Title. It was a confusing bit of business, but now we know what went down and who knew what when.
According to PWInsider.com, Maverick did not know he was going to be offered a new deal until it aired on NXT TV. While Maverick was signed on May 27, he had filed trademarks earlier in the day for both Spud and Rockstar Spud, his ring name from his days on the independent scene. There is no word on when WWE decided to re-sign Maverick or if it was a plan from the beginning.
Maverick’s story was a heck of a ride. Check out how we got here:
Opinion: The more I’ve seen people talk about this story, the more I see of both sides. It was a very entertaining story and I was enjoying what we were getting, but at the same time it is a little hard to take a story about their employment in the current wrestling industry. What we got was entertaining, but there is another side to it and that side is a little hard to take.
