Well it’s better than nothing. There are a lot of changes taking place throughout the wrestling world due to the spread of the Coronavirus. Several things have had to either be moved, postponed, canceled or drastically changed due to the outbreak and while some of these are more important than other, they have all been taking place. That is the case with one major item that WWE produces annually and this year’s version is going to be rather different.

Wrestling and video games go together to near perfection. It makes a lot of sense to have a video game featuring wrestlers and wrestling situations as fans are going to want to be able to have matches as their favorite wrestlers. Wrestling video games have been around for over thirty years and they aren’t going away. WWE has a regular game every year, but this year’s version won’t be quite the same.

2K, the official publisher of WWE’s video games, has announced that WWE2K Battlegrounds will be released later this year in place of the canceled WWE2K21. The new game will “arcade-style action and over-the-top Superstar designs, environments and moves”. There is no specific release date announced for the game, though it will be released some time this fall. WWE2K21 was officially canceled last week.

WWE has gone arcade style before. Check out a trailer for the game and something in the same vein:

Opinion: This is about all that can be done as a tradition 2K game isn’t going to work without motion capture. This is better than nothing and having something a little over the top might be an improvement over what has been done for a good while. I know some fans aren’t going to be happy with that and that is completely fine. Changing things up, at least for a year, could be a very good idea.
