WWE regularly keeps track of the top performances in the company’s history and tends to make a big deal about a new record being set. That will be the case this week.

This week on Monday Night Raw, Gunther defeated Chad Gable in the show’s main event to retain the Intercontinental Title. The win caused Gunther’s reign to reach 452 days as of Tuesday. Gunther has no title defenses scheduled before Friday, meaning he will break Honky Tonk Man’s 35 year old record for longest reign in the title’s history. Honky Tonk Man held the title for 454 days from June 2, 1987 until August 29, 1988.

Opinion: This is something that has been a very long time in the making and it is kind of hard to believe that it finally happened. At the end of the day though, Honky Tonk Man has held the record for an incredible amount of time and it isn’t like he’s going to be forgotten based on losing this one record. Gunther’s time as champion has been remarkable, and now we get to see just how far he can take this.
