Melina Explains How WWE Would Punish Its Women's Wrestlers

That’s a little harsh. The world of women’s wrestling in WWE has come a very long way in the last few years and that has been a very good thing. Women’s wrestling had long been treated as a sideshow and rarely something to be taken seriously. Now though, women in WWE have become among the top stars in the promotion. However, things were not always that way and now we know just how bad things got.

In a new interview with Wrestling Purists, former WWE star Melina spoke about how women were punished in WWE in previous eras. Melina said that after women would do something extraordinary, they be punished with absurd matches, such as swimsuit matches or lingerie matches. This would be done in an effort to see how the women would react, with Melina eventually trying to turn it into a game to see just how far the company would take it with them.

Opinion: This is one of those things that feels almost impossible to imagine but it wasn’t all that long ago. Women’s wrestling was little more than a joke for years in WWE and it is nice to see the company having turned things around. Punishing wrestlers for whatever reasons is such a ridiculous concept and thankfully that has finally been dropped. It didn’t need to happen in the first place and hopefully it never will again.
