Major Name Turned Down Greatest Royal Rumble Spot

They’re going all out. With only twenty five names announced for the Greatest Royal Rumble match less than ten hours to go before the match itself, there are several names that could be added to fill in some of the gaps. That includes various lower level names or the potential of some surprises/legends. It turns out that WWE has been trying for some of the biggest names of all time, but one in particular turned them down.

He did it once, and then did it again.

Shawn Michaels goes the distance in the 1995 Royal Rumble Match - Remember the Rumble

According to Sean Waltman’s 1-2-360 podcast, the WWE had been trying to get Shawn Michaels to appear in the match but Michaels turned them down. Michaels was offered a great deal of money to return but stayed true to his word of never wrestling another match after retiring back in 2010. He also cited an upcoming event with one of his kids and would not move away from the event for the sake of wrestling on the show.

Opinion: I’m glad Michaels isn’t getting into the match. Even though it’s just a battle royal and hardly the same as a big singles match, it’s nice to see someone actually stick to their retirement promise. Michaels is one of the biggest stars of all time and has a great history in the Royal Rumble, but at the same time he doesn’t need to come out of retirement and potentially embarrass himself, while also setting off annoying questions about another comeback. Stay away, which is exactly what he’s doing.
