These aren’t hard times. To say Dusty Rhodes is one of the most influential names in wrestling history is a drastic understatement. He was around for several decades and performed as a wrestler, commentator, authority figure and other roles in front of the camera while also being in charge behind the scenes. Therefore, he’s worthy of some form of a tribute, which is where NXT comes in.

As announced at tonight’s “NXT” tapings, the Dusty Rhodes Tag Team Classic will be returning at some point in 2018. The first team announced is the Forgotten Sons, a new team comprised of Steve Cutler and Wesley Blake. This will be the third edition of the tournament, with Samoa Joe and Finn Balor winning the inaugural tournament in 2015 and the Authors of Pain winning in 2016.

You can see a graphic for the tournament in this tweet from the tapings:

Opinion: This is a great idea as the tournament is a fine way to set up either a singles feud between a team or new challengers for the Tag Team Titles. It’s also a nice tribute to someone who had so much of an influence on the way NXT works today as almost no one was as important as Dusty Rhodes.
