Long Road: Update On WWE's Plans For Gable Steveson

They had an idea. Every so often, a star comes along who feels perfect for WWE. It might be due to their background, look, personality or some combination thereof, but WWE sees something that makes them want to push a star very hard. That appeared to be the case with a former amateur wrestling star, but nothing has happened as of yet. Now we know a bit more about what was planned.

Back in 2021, WWE signed Olympic gold medal winning wrestler and two time NCAA heavyweight wrestling champion Gable Steveson to a contract. However, Steveson, 22, has yet to wrestle a match for WWE and has only made a handful of appearances. According to the Wrestling Observer Newsletter, the original plan was for Steveson to make appearances on Monday Night Raw before debuting at WrestleMania 38. Steveson had to have surgery to repair a heart condition and is said to have not “lit the world on fire by any means”. There is no word on when he is expected to make his WWE in-ring debut.

Opinion: The best thing that Steveson has going for him in WWE is that he hasn’t wrestled yet. There is no horrible match or lackluster debut to overcome and that means he can still have his big debut and possibly do well. So far all he is done is show up, stand next to various people and suplex Chad Gable. I would much rather wait for him to be ready than for WWE to squander someone who could be something special, which is what Steveson’s amateur resume says he is.
