It’s An Idea: Original Concept For AEW Interim Titles, Possible Thinking Behind Them

They have a plan for that. Titles are one of the most important concepts in all of wrestling and it means a lot when one of them changes hands. Occasionally a title change might not be the planned outcome and something else needs to be done. That was the case multiple times this year in AEW so they came up with a unique solution. Now we have some more clarification on their idea.

This week on AEW Dynamite, Jamie Hayter was promoted from Interim AEW Women’s Champion to full Women’s Champion as Thunder Rosa was officially stripped of the title. In addition, Toni Storm’s Interim Women’s Title reign was promoted to a full on Women’s Title reign, erasing the Interim Women’s Title from history on all counts.

According to Dave Meltzer on Wrestling Observer Radio, the original idea for introducing an interim title of any kind was to keep the AEW World Title on an injured CM Punk earlier this year, with Jon Moxley also getting a reign of his own. Meltzer believes (this is NOT confirmed as fact) that if a champion will be gone for a few months, an interim title will be created, but if the time is closer to six months, the title will be vacated.

Opinion: The interim titles are one of those concepts that don’t seem to need to exist in AEW as I’m still not sure why the titles are not just vacated in the first place. Hopefully it isn’t something AEW has to go back to again as you never want to see anyone get hurt, but having them around in the first place never seemed to be the most logical way to go. Maybe AEW can get away from the idea, but it doesn’t seem likely.
