It was a surprise. There are all kinds of different segments that you might see on any given wrestling show, including some which involve a twist. This might be any kind of surprise, including someone making either a debut or a return. We saw that again this week, and now we know some rather interesting details about someone who was making their return to a show.

Earlier this week, Shawn Spears made his return to NXT, attacking Ridge Holland. This marked Spears’ first appearance for WWE since his release in 2019, with a stint in AEW in between. According to Fightful Select, Spears’ return was kept a secret from almost everyone in NXT. Internal documents listed Holland’s attacker as “Quote Man”, referencing a series of vignettes featuring mysterious quotes in recent weeks. Shawn Michaels filled Spears’ role during rehearsals earlier in the day. Spears is believed to have been signed to a new deal around Vengeance Day, earlier this month.

Opinion: This is the kind of thing that makes for an impressive moment, as I’m not sure anyone had Spears returning in their prediction pools. Spears was a genuine surprise and apparently WWE managed to make that the case throughout NXT. Having Spears as the reveal helps a lot as there were no expectations coming in, meaning it was harder to make it into a disappointment.
