Give It Back? Original Plans For Recent NXT Title Change Were Very Different

They had an idea. Wrestling is something that is often planned out far in advance but there are always things that can go wrong. These are often things outside of the promotion’s control and can cause quite a few changes. One of those changes can often lead to another change, which seems to have been the case over the weekend, when something may have taken fans by surprise.

Over the weekend at NXT No Mercy, Trick Williams defeated Dominik Mysterio to win the NXT North American Title. Williams was replacing Mustafa Ali, who was scheduled to challenge Mysterio for the title but was released earlier in the month. According to Bryan Alvarez on Wrestling Observer Radio, Ali was not planned to win the title. Therefore, Alvarez believes that Williams may lose the title back to Mysterio soon. A rematch between the two has been set for this week’s NXT.

Opinion: That would make sense, as Williams winning the title was a cool surprise, but it felt like Mysterio lost the title out of nowhere. I wouldn’t be surprised to see Mysterio get the title back sooner rather than later, but what matters is that Williams won the title in the first place. It gives him something to point to later, as he beat Mysterio clean, which is more than a lot of people can say.
