It’s certainly a foot in the door. Earlier this month at WrestleMania 36, Drew McIntyre changed the WWE main event scene by defeating Brock Lesnar to become the new WWE Champion. McIntyre’s coronation as the top name in the company had been a long time coming and nearly went down during his first run in WWE. McIntyre certainly came into the company with a bang, but what made him such a big deal so fast?

McIntyre made his original debut in WWE back in 2007 and was soon dubbed Vince McMahon’s Chosen One. This was rumored to eventually see McIntyre become WWE Champion, but instead he wound up being part of a comedy rock band. It is clear that plans changed for a few reasons, but what was it that WWE saw in him in the first place? As it turns out, it was something rather simple.

During an interview with MuscleManMalcolm, former WWE writer Dave Lagana talked about McIntyre’s early days on the main roster and what caused McMahon to push him. Lagana said that one day he, Dusty Rhodes, Vince McMahon WWE writer Jenn Bloodsworth were talking about McIntyre. McMahon asked Bloodsworth what she thought about McIntyre, to which Bloodsworth replied “he’s hot”. That was enough for McMahon to give McIntyre his initial major push.

It was a fascinating interview. Check out the full interview, plus some of McIntyre’s original push:

Opinion: McIntyre is the kind of guy who certainly had the look and it makes sense that it would play a big role in his initial push. The same is true today, as McIntyre looks like someone who could be the star of the company. That is something that can help a wrestler quite a bit, which has been the case for several big stars over the year. McIntyre could be a major deal for a long time to come and that is not a bad thing.

What do you think of McIntyre? How long will he be champion? Let us know in the comments below.
