Who was first? WCW wasn’t exactly known for making its own stars. Rather than creating stars from scratch or developing new talent, they spent most of their time signing talent from other companies and riding off their already existing status. That works fine for awhile but at some point you have to do your own thing. Twenty years ago today, that was the case.

WWE has released a video of Goldberg’s full debut match on “Monday Nitro”, September 22, 1997. Goldberg came in as an unknown with even commentator Mike Tenay having no idea who he was. In a match with Hugh Morrus, Goldberg not only kicked out of Morrus’ No Laughing Matter finisher but pinned him clean with what would become known as the Jackhammer. Here’s the full match.

Goldberg's 20th Anniversary: WCW debut match vs. Hugh Morrus: Nitro, September 22, 1997

Opinion: My goodness this makes me feel old. I remember watching this live and being impressed by Goldberg as you never saw a newcomer win a match like this. It’s always fun to look back at these guys and see them at such a raw level as Goldberg didn’t even have the spear in this match. It’s kind of amazing to see how far he would come in such a short time as he was World Champion less than ten months later.
