The first of many. WrestleMania 37 saw a lot of changes take place, including several title changes. There were multiple new champions crowned and that is the kind of thing that can change the way WWE works for a long time to come. Just winning a title is the easier part though, as then the new champion has to retain it. That will be the case again next month for one of the new champions.
This week on SmackDown, a SmackDown Women’s Title match was set for WrestleMania Backlash, where new champion Bianca Belair will defend against Bayley. This comes after Bayley called out Belair for a title match last week, though the match was not confirmed then. The two had a backstage confrontation this week, as Bayley congratulated Belair on her title win but then laughed at her. The match will be Belair’s first title defense, as well as Bayley’s first match since February, assuming she does not wrestle again before the pay per view.
Opinion: I don’t think this is the biggest surprise, but it is a good thing to get to the title match without needing some big angle or segment to set it up. This is a simple story: Belair is the new champion and the former champion wants her title back. It is something that writes itself and we should be in for a good match between them, likely with Belair winning to establish herself even further.
If nothing else, it will be nice to see Bayley back in the ring again. I’m not sure what has kept her out of action for almost two months but she is far too talented to keep on the sidelines if she is capable of getting in the ring. Bayley has been nailing almost everything she has been doing backstage, but it would be nice to see her wrestling again because she is really good at it.
