What could have been. The rise of AEW has changed the way that wrestling works. For decades, WWE was the only major promotion in America and nothing came close to it. That did not leave a lot of room for some of the top wrestlers in the world, as WWE only has so many places. Now some wrestlers can try their hand over in AEW, with a few WWE names making the jump. One of those wrestlers had an idea for something to do in WWE before he left.
Current AEW and former WWE star Christian Cage was a guest on the latest edition of the AEW Unrestricted podcast. When asked who he would have liked to face in WWE before he left, Cage named Kevin Owens and Sami Zayn as people who interested him. Cage felt that Owens was fearless both on the microphone and in the ring, while he felt that Zayn would be a good option based on Zayn’s current character.
Cage returned to WWE in 2020 and, following a one minute match against Randy Orton in the summer, made a surprise return in the 2021 Royal Rumble. However, that was his last televised appearance with the promotion as he ultimately went on to debut at AEW Full Gear. He has since signed a full time deal with the company and has wrestled multiple matches on AEW Dynamite.
Opinion: This is the kind of thing that made for an interesting move, though I would be curious to see Cage vs. the younger generation in WWE. Cage is a legend in any promotion and it would have been cool to see what he could do with the talent that WWE already has on hand. It could have gone rather well for everyone, but if this is what Cage wants to do, then good for him on taking a shot elsewhere.
