That’s pretty mainstream. WWE is in a weird place when it comes to mainstream attention. Things have gotten better in the last few years as WWE has gone PG and they are not on FOX every Friday night, but there is still a big gap between professional wrestling and almost anything else in mainstream sports. Every now and then you see something a little different though, and that will be the case again this summer.

WWE has announced that the Best WWE Moment Award will return to the 2021 ESPY Awards. This will be the second version of the award, with Roman Reigns’ return winning the inaugural edition in 2019. This year’s version will be determined by fan voting, with fans being allowed to choose from sixteen options in a tournament style format. Here are the first round matches, with fans being able to vote here:

MATCH 1

  • Dominik Mysterio makes in-ring debut at SummerSlam, with dad Rey Mysterio in his corner
  • Roman Reigns returns to SmackDown and aligns with Paul Heyman

MATCH 2

  • Pat McAfee confronts and punts Adam Cole
  • Goldberg returns to challenge Drew McIntyre for WWE Championship

MATCH 3

  • Keith Lee breaks Adam Cole’s record 403-day reign as NXT Champion at The Great American Bash
  • Sasha Banks & Bianca Belair become the first Black women to battle in a WrestleMania main event

MATCH 4

  • Edge wins the 2021 Men’s Royal Rumble and becomes the third person ever to win from the No. 1 spot
  • Kevin Owens stuns Logan Paul at WrestleMania

MATCH 5

  • Sasha Banks wins the Smackdown Women’s Championship at Hell in a Cell
  • Randy Orton sets The Fiend on fire at TLC

MATCH 6

  • Undertaker celebrates his 30th anniversary and gives his final farewell
  • Bobby Lashley wins WWE Championship for the first time

MATCH 7

  • Bayley turns on Sasha Banks
  • Bad Bunny teams with Damian Priest at WrestleMania and unveils a “Bunny Destroyer”

MATCH 8

  • Bianca Belair wins the Women’s Royal Rumble, sets record for longest time spent in the match
  • The Miz cashes in MITB at Elimination Chamber, becomes the first two-time Grand Slam champ

This should get some people debating. Check out some of the options:

Roman Reigns turns to Paul Heyman ahead of WWE Payback: SmackDown, August 28, 2020

Bianca Belair closes in on WrestleMania gold: WrestleMania 37 – Night 1 (WWE Network Exclusive)

The Undertaker says Final Farewell to the WWE Universe: Survivor Series 2020 (WWE Network Exclusive)

Bayley brutalizes Sasha Banks: SmackDown, September 4, 2020

Opinion: Now this could be interesting, as there are some good options to pick from and the idea of having fans vote on them makes it better. If nothing else, it is pretty cool to see WWE getting some more attention like this. WWE has been trying to become more mainstream for the better part of forty years now and while this isn’t a game changer, it does not look bad to be rubbing elbows with every big sports story at the ESPY’s.
