Wait what? It is rare to see that many major surprises in WWE these days. They have so much content and so many things going on that they can only do so many new ideas in such little time. It can be a problem at times, but it makes things that much better when they get an idea that you didn’t see coming. That was the case this week and in a very big way.
The major surprise coming out of this Sunday’s Summerslam was the return of Roman Reigns after a five month absence. Reigns had been missing in action due to fears of the Coronavirus pandemic but made his return to attack both the new Universal Champion the Fiend and former champion Braun Strowman. A triple threat title match was announced for Payback, but Reigns is going into it in a different way.
It’s a big one. Check out how the show ended:
This week on SmackDown, Reigns revealed that he was now in some sort of an association with Paul Heyman. At the end of the show, Reigns was asked to sign a contract for the title match but said he couldn’t do it. Reigns promised to be at Payback and win the title again, which he said was a spoiler. The camera panned out to show Heyman sitting next to him and smiling. This would be the first time that the two have been associated together after Reigns and Heyman’s client Brock Lesnar have feuded on and off for years.
Opinion: Well ok then. This one actually got me and that’s a nice feeling to have every now and then. Reigns as a heel is something that WWE has seemed interested in trying before but never actually pulled the trigger. Maybe they didn’t think he could make it work on the microphone but Heyman certainly can. This could be a heck of a move, provided WWE follows it up in a good way.
