Well that’s fast. AEW has done a lot of good in its few years of existence, with the company’s championships being a high point. The titles have been treated as something of value and a title change still means a lot. That is the case no matter how someone wins a title, but now someone will be winning a new one through means that are not exactly the norm for a title change.
The main event of this week’s AEW Dynamite saw Interim AEW World Champion Jon Moxley defeat AEW World Champion CM Punk to unify the titles in a match that lasted three minutes. Punk injured his previously injured foot during the match and Moxley hit a pair of Death Riders for the win. The victory makes Moxley the undisputed AEW World Champion and the first ever two time champion in the title’s history.
Opinion: I’m not sure what happened here, but either Punk is still hurt or the reported backstage issues are more serious than they seem. I can’t imagine that everything is perfectly fine with that kind of an ending as Punk was more or less squashed to lose the title. This could get a lot more interesting in a hurry and I wouldn’t be surprised to not see Punk for a very long time.
