He’s got a chance. Titles are one of the most important things in all of wrestling and it isn’t that hard to figure out why. A title is a perfectly understandable symbol of someone being the best at what they do and they have a big shiny belt to prove it. That is the kind of thing that has worked for decades in wrestling and it always will. Now, we are going to be seeing a new champion crowned and we know exactly when.

Two weeks ago, Keith Lee defeated Adam Cole to become the new NXT Champion. At the same time though, Lee was still the reigning North American Champion, which made things a little complicated for him. The following week, Lee defended both titles against Dominik Dijakovic and it seemed like things were going well. Things can change in a hurry though, and that was the case this week.

During this week’s NXT, Lee announced that he would be vacating the North American Title. Lee wanted to allow someone else to gain an opportunity like he had, citing the opportunity he received to become the NXT Champion. General Manager William Regal announced that there would be a series of triple threat matches with the winners facing off in a ladder match at Takeover: XXX on August 22 to crown a new champion.

The new champion will have a lot to live up to. Check out some of the title’s history:

Opinion: You kind of had to know that this was coming as there was no reason to have Lee hold both titles. NXT has a lot of talent on their roster and someone could get something out of the North American Title. It’s a perfectly solid midcard title and now someone else can get a run with the thing. If nothing else, it’s nice to hear about the next Takeover and having it be back on the schedule where it belongs.
