That would have been a twist. One of the biggest wrestling stories in recent weeks has been the saga of CM Punk. Following a backstage issue at AEW All In, Punk was fired with cause from the company, ending his run with AEW immediately. This has opened up several questions about Punk’s future, but now we know what he might have had in mind had things not gone in this direction.

Last year at All Out 2022, Punk was involved in a backstage altercation with the Elite. As a result, Punk was suspended indefinitely and his future with the company was unclear before he returned in July 2023. According to Fightful Select, sources close to Punk said that he was considering a return to WWE in 2022, possibly for an appearance in the Royal Rumble. This would have led to a match at WrestleMania with whomever eliminated him from the match, possibly Kevin Owens. There is nothing to indicate that either AEW or WWE would have approved of the plan.

Opinion: This would be the definition of something I would have to see to believe. Not only was Punk still recovering from a torn tricep at this point, but the idea of WWE welcoming him back so quickly would be a bit of a surprise. It is hard to fathom Punk returning to WWE in any form, but this sounds like a stretch, especially with everything else that has taken place between all of the parties involved.
