Not another one. The wrestling landscape has been changing quite a bit as of late and a lot of that has been due to all of the names moving around from one promotion to the other. While WWE is still the biggest promotion in the world, it is not the be all and end all destination for every wrestler these days. Now it seems that another WWE wrestler might be up for grabs sooner rather than later.
According to Fightful Select, former NXT United Kingdom Champion Pete Dunne’s contract is expiring rather soon. While not confirmed, one source said that it could be as soon as Summerslam weekend later this month. This would be similar to the time scale for Adam Cole’s contract, though it is not clear if Dunne signed a short term extension to reach this point like Cole did. There is no word on what Dunne’s plans are, including nothing to suggest that he is wanting to leave WWE.
Dunne, 27 years old, debuted for WWE in 2017 and made it to the finals of the United Kingdom Championship Tournament before losing to Tyler Bate. This led to a rematch at Takeover: Chicago in May, which received rave reviews. Dunne would go on to hold the title for a then record 685 days. He is also a former NXT Tag Team Champion, winning the titles with Matt Riddle as part of the BroserWeights in 2020.
Dunne is fairly awesome. Check out some of his greatest hits:
Opinion: For the life of me I’m not sure if I can handle another promising star leaving WWE. It has been all over the place as of late, though I’m curious to see how many stars can find a big spot elsewhere. I know the simple answer would be for Dunne to go to AEW, but how many people can AEW present at once? There is always the chance that Dunne sticks around too, but WWE might have to earn that decision.
