The Saturday Night Wars? One of the more interesting things about wrestling at the moment has been the Wednesday Night Wars, with AEW Dynamite vs. NXT. So far AEW has won most of the nights, though it has not exactly been complete dominance. This makes for some interesting moments as we find out what has happened every Wednesday, but now things are going to be changing for a pretty big week.
One of the modern trends of wrestling, especially in WWE, has been to bunch several shows together over a major weekend. This is certainly the case over most of the Big Four WWE pay per view weekends, with a SmackDown, an NXT Takeover, the pay per view itself, and a Monday Night Raw. That will be the case again this month for Summerslam, but there is going to be some company.
TNT has announced that three upcoming editions of AEW Dynamite will be preempted due to the network’s coverage of the NBA. One of these moves will put Dynamite up against the first hour of NXT Takeover: XXX on Saturday August 22. These moves were known in advance, though it was not clear which specific shows would be preempted. It is not clear if any more shows will be changed.
Here are the announced changes:
1. The Wednesday, August 19 episode will air on Saturday, August 22 at 6:00pm ET / 3:00pm PT
2. The Wednesday, August 26 episode will air Thursday, August 27 at 8:00pm ET/PT
3. The Wednesday, September 16 episode will air Thursday, September 17 at 8:00pm ET/PT
Dynamite is worth watching. Check out some of what they have been doing lately:
Opinion: The moves over to Thursday don’t mean much but now the question becomes what happens with the show up against a major NXT event. That is a little bit different than going head to head against a show as big as Takeover and will be a huge test for Dynamite. It should also be interesting to see what the numbers are when neither show has any competition, which could be good or bad.
