Seth Rollins will face Dolph Ziggler for the WWE Intercontinental Championship at SummerSlam on Sunday, August 19. The Kingslayer and The Showoff have been feuding over the past few months for the title and their upcoming match is just the next chapter in their story.

But could it be that the ending to this match has already been spoiled? The AT&T Center’s website is advertising WWE’s Hell in a Cell event for September 16. One of the matches listed on the card is a tag team match featuring Rollins and Dean Ambrose versus Drew McIntyre and the Intercontinental champion, Dolph Ziggler. It does appear that Ziggler will retain his championship at SummerSlam.

For many fans, the first question is likely why? Why is the rivalry between Seth and Dolph going to continue after August 19? It’s not as though the two men don’t have good chemistry in the ring because they certainly do. It’s also not because their feud has been flat for some reason because it most definitely hasn’t. Rollins and Ziggler indeed have great chemistry and their matches have been incredibly fun to watch.

Dolph Ziggler vs. Seth Rollins - Intercontinental Championship Match: Raw, June 25, 2018

Seth and Dolph are two pros and as such, they understand the main objective is to make their opponents look good. They know that when two guys are selfless in the ring and work together to get the match over, good things can happen.

Ultimately it’s the fans who benefit from such an effort. The fans know that every time Seth and Dolph get in the ring, they’re going to steal the show. In a company where main event spots are limited due to the immense talent rosters, it’s important to maximize minutes and take advantage of every opportunity to shine. That’s precisely what Rollins and Ziggler do as adversaries.

But at some point, Seth Rollins is due for a shot at the Universal Championship. That prospect may be a bit complicated right now, thanks to the ongoing drama of Brock Lesnar and his imminent second exit to the UFC. But there’s no doubt that Seth has earned another run on top of Monday Night Raw. But could it be that Seth is already challenging for Raw’s top championship?

The Intercontinental title has arguably become the most important championship on the red brand. It’s the one strap that’s regularly featured on TV and often defended on pay-per-view. It is the company’s workhorse title and it has the potential to make the career of anyone wearing it. While Seth is already a made man, maybe he’s still in this feud for the sake of the title and not necessarily because he needs it.

Perhaps the belt is a consolation prize of sorts for The Architect. If Rollins can’t be on top with the Universal title, then the IC title is the next best thing. The championship does have the respect of the fans and stars in the business hold the title in high regard as well. Seth seems rejuvenated and he’s really never been hotter in his WWE career. So maybe he is in the right place, at least right now.

Then there’s the issue of Rollins’ best friend and cornerman for SummerSlam, Dean Ambrose. Ambrose recently returned to WWE from injury and will be there for Seth on August 19. His addition to this storyline may be the perfect reason to continue the rivalry between Rollins and Ziggler.

After all, Dean represents some fresh match-ups in this angle. He and Ziggler have waged war before of course but Ambrose and McIntyre is something different. Dean could feud with Drew while Seth continues to chase Dolph. Or Dean could challenge for the Intercontinental Championship as Seth and Drew finally have the five-star feud that many fans believe they can.

Of course Seth and Dean could always transition from the IC title to the Raw Tag Team Championships. But if that happens, then established tag teams like The Revival would once again be left out of the equation. No other team has arguably worked harder to deserve the belts than Scott Dawson and Dash Wilder have.

It could very well be that Seth and Dolph are in this feud while WWE moves the pieces around in other areas. Lesnar may or may not lose the Universal Championship to Roman Reigns at SummerSlam. But no matter what happens, that situation could come to a point where Seth has room to slide back into title contention.

Ambrose could walk away from the angle with Dolph and Drew as the new Intercontinental champion. Or it could be that Ambrose will betray Seth at Hell in a Cell. That would leave Ziggler and McIntyre to move on to other guys.

The important thing to remember for fans is that the card is subject to change. Hell in a Cell may feature cerrtain matches right now but that does not mean those matches will indeed happen. WWE could change direction at any moment and send this storyline into a tailspin. In the meantime, fans are excited for Dean Ambrose’s return and Seth versus Dolph continues to impress in the ring. Perhaps this ride is only just beginning.
