The hottest story in wrestling right now is about WWE’s increasingly aggressive moves to shore up their position in various worldwide markets and establish their own brands in areas of major competition.

WWE’s UK tournament had been planned for some time, but it wasn’t originally scheduled for January. That slot was originally occupied by the now-confirmed women’s tournament. The reason for the change? We can’t say for sure, but popular speculation attributes the timing to the recent premiere of UK station ITV’s World of Sport program.

According to the Wrestling Observer (subscription required), WWE has similar plans to take on major Mexican promotions like CMLL and AAA. A recent Network survey asked subscribers in Mexico about their interest in various local promotions and if they’d like to see them on the WWE Network.

Reports strongly suggest that WWE is close to a deal with several UK promotions to be broadcast on the Network, and those deals would likely be the blueprint for further international expansion.

The survey also asked about a Lucha Libre tournament on the Network and “more localized regular content.”
