This week’s SmackDown saw John Cena take on Baron Corbin in the main event, setting the tone for both men heading into the Royal Rumble. With Cena set to take on AJ Styles for the WWE Championship and Corbin set for the Rumble itself, the momentum would be huge for both stars.

The end result was a pretty straightforward match–though with the added benefit of AJ Styles on commentary and a whole lot of trash talk from Corbin. In the end, Cena hit his iconic sequence (or “five moves of doom,” if you prefer) to pin Corbin 1, 2, 3.

I remarked in today’s SmackDown preview that a clean finish tonight seemed unlikely given how much both competitors had to lose heading into the next pay-per-view, but how wrong I was!

It seemed that Corbin would be an obvious SmackDown answer to Braun Strowman’s intimidating presence in the Rumble, but it seems the Lone Wolf is no longer being billed as a favorite in the event.

Of course, there are still a few weeks to go before we hit the Alamodome, and anything could happen in that time.
