“Bad News” Barrett is the new Intercontinental Champion. Barrett defeated Big E for the IC strap during WWE’s “Extreme Rules” event, which took place on May 4 in the Izod Center in New Jersey.

Barrett had defeated three men in a No. 1 Contenders Tournament in order to face Big E on the “Extreme Rules” stage. Securing the victory also meant securing Barrett’s fourth Intercontinental Championship reign.

Barrett last held the title in 2013 before leaving WWE television in response to an injury. While rehabilitating, Barrett was repackaged as a sarcastic character that provides “bad news” to those around him, when the comments are often slight jabs at the person in which he is presenting the news.

Barrett and Big E had an evenly fought match during the WWE special event, which saw Barrett win with the “Bull Hammer” in mid-air. The Intercontinental Championship was the only WWE title to change hands during “Extreme Rules.”

Editor’s Note:
Barrett is super over right now, Big E is not. Makes sense. Put the strap on someone the fans are buying into and give them a reason to care about that championship again. Boom!
