One of the big news stories of the week is the revelation of the new commentary teams that will be debuting next week on WWE programming. Raw commentary will be handled by Vic Joseph, Dio Maddin, and Jerry Lawler, NXT will continue to be called by Mauro Ranallo, Nigel McGuinness, and Beth Phoenix, and SmackDown Live will consist of Michael Cole, Corey Graves, and Renee Young, though Young is listed as a special contributor, meaning she may not be appearing full time.

But who made these decisions to change up the commentary teams?

According to the most recent issue of the Wrestling Observer NewsletterMaddin was chosen by Paul Heyman to be a part of the Raw crew. Joseph, who has done a good job with 205 Live, was also a Heyman pick to give the show a new look, but it was less out of the box. While Maddin has no commentary experience, Heyman sees him as someone who could be successful as a new voice in this position.

Furthermore, the return of Lawler is a surprise. Even though Lawler’s last comeback was strong, and it was obvious he was better in the role than anyone else, it was short-lived because of his age. He does have decades of experience at this but his return after being put out to pasture is usually not a move Vince makes.

Lawler’s inclusion on the team is said to be temporary.

The NXT crew of Mauro Ranallo, Nigel McGuinness, and Beth Phoenix will be unchanged. Cathy Kelley and Josiah Williams will be the backstage interviewers.

It is unknown at this time what the future of Tom Philips, Byron Saxton will be. Furthermore, nothing has been discussed with regards to Aiden English, who has not been moved to another show.

Will we ever see calls like this again?

Editor’s Opinion:

I have to admit that the Dio Maddin pick definitely threw me for a loop. I don’t know much about him, but if he has Heyman’s backing, then there must be something there that can benefit the Raw brand.
