It was 15 years ago today (May 23rd) that the wrestling world lost Owen Hart to a tragic accident at the “Over the Edge” pay-per-view in 1999.

Hart was supposed to descend from the rafters prior to his match with the Godfather in his Blue Blazer attire. The wires and cables he was attached to snapped, resulting in him falling from the rafters into the ring.

He was rushed to a nearby hospital where he was pronounced dead.

Owen’s brother, WWE Hall of Famer Bret Hart, recently took to his Facebook page to say a few words on this day:

Here are some highlights from Bret and Owen’s historic opening match at WrestleMania X in Madison Square Garden:

Owen was a two-time WWE Intercontinental Champion, four-time World Tag Team Champion and one-time European Champion. He was the winner of the 1994 King of the Ring tournament, as well as Slammy Awards in both 1996 and 1997.

Editor’s Note

It’s been 15 years, but it feels like it was yesterday. Owen Hart was a wrestling legend to the people of Canada, along with the rest of the Hart family. He left a legacy in that ring that his friends, family and fans can be proud of. Rest in peace, Owen.
